Peres asks Netanyahu to form new Israeli government

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli President Shimon Peres on Saturday formally asked incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new governing coalition following the January 22 general election.

Netanyahu will initially have 28 days to form a coalition. His rightist Likud-Beitenu party took a battering at the ballot box and won 31 seats, 11 fewer than it had going into the election, but it nevertheless emerged as the largest party.

Last week Peres consulted with representatives from the 12 parties elected to the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, and factions that control 82 seats recommended that Netanyahu should be asked to form a coalition.

His administration is expected to be cobbled together from a new centrist party headed by former TV personality Yair Lapid, which with 19 seats, is the second-largest party, the 12-seat far-right Bayit Yehudi ("Jewish Home") faction and other centrist and religious parties.

Israeli coalition-building can be a laborious process and Netanyahu may require the full 28 days before announcing success. He can ask Peres for another 14 days to complete the task, if needed.

PFT: Peyton is league's comeback player of year

Ray Rice, Margaret Rosburg, Alison HarbaughAP

As the 49ers and Ravens had their final Super Bowl practices on Saturday at the Superdome, both Harbaugh brothers allowed players and coaches to bring their friends and families along, on the theory that the most important thing at this late point is to keep the players loose for the game.

?Get a stretch, get the blood moving a little bit,? 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh told pool reporter Matt Maiocco of the purpose of his team?s final practice. ?And get some new blood going. Then, afterward, enjoy it with your family. Get some pictures and make it possible for everybody to come down to the Super Bowl field.?

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said family is important to him and important to his team.

?It?s the kind of foundation of everything we do,? Harbaugh told pool reporter Brian Allee-Walsh. ?That has been the whole story line of the whole week. In a sense that?s how we did it growing up, when we were kids. We grew up around dad?s teams. Most of the time in the NFL it?s not that way. Most of the time there is the separation of families and it?s considered to be a distraction. I just think the opposite. For me, it?s a distraction when people are more worried about their families not being allowed to be a part of it. When the families are included, the kids get to the know the players, and I think guys have a better sense of well being. I think this is a good example of it right here.?

Both Harbaughs said their teams practiced well in New Orleans this week.

?The word I would use is effective,? John Harbaugh said. ?We have been very effective. We?ve gotten everything we?ve needed to get done, that?s the No. 1 thing.?

Jim Harbaugh said his team?s Super Bowl week practices reflected the same focus they?ve shown all year.

?I feel good,? Harbaugh said. ?The preparation has been outstanding, very focused. The players care about winning. They care about this team, and that?s complimentary to the players and the way their focus has been. And that?s not something that?s been just this week. That wasn?t just created this week. That?s been all season and the offseason. It speaks very highly of the players.?

Now the practices are over, and the game is just a day away.

An awesome PC gaming-workstation desk seeks Kickstarter funding

Sometimes you come across a product that makes you think, "Why hasn't someone else come up with this before?" Such is the case with a recently launched Kickstarter fund raising project from a company called Gamers Paradise. It is looking to create an awesome looking desk that could eliminate a lot of issues for both gaming PC fans and for folks who simply want a better workstation.

The Kickstarter page shows the design of the desk, which has seven USB 2.0 ports that have been "strategically placed" on the front left side, the center and the back of the desk. Six power plugs have also been placed in the back of the desk. These additions, in theory, should solve a lot of the problems most people have with a ton of power, USB and other cables that tend to gather at the bottom or to the side of a workstation.

The Gamers Paradise desk will also have two HDMI ports for monitors, with an option to add a DVI port, along with audio ports that come with a physical audio switch that lets users switch from their headphones to their speakers. It will also have two LED light bars at the back of the desk. The desk itself is 60 inches wide, 30.5 inches in height and 26 inches in depth and is made out of a carbon fiber vinyl with some steel trim. There will be some assembly required by the owner to attach the legs.

Gamers Paradise is seeking $75,000 to launch his PC workstation desk and it has already raised over $10,000 as of this writing. People who pledge $489 or more will get the desk and people who pledge $999 or more will get an upgraded version with USB 3.0 ports, a white carbon finish, custom color LED lights and a way to add even more ports to the desk, although there are no details on how that will work.

Why is Beckham sitting on the bench for nothing?

(AP) ? David Beckham has won league championships in three countries on two continents, earns millions of dollars in endorsements and his name is practically synonymous with celebrity itself. He has his own cologne, for goodness sake. So why is he even bothering to sit on the bench for the Paris Saint-Germain football club?

His royal highness of football doesn't need the money ? and he's said he'll donate his PSG salary to charity ? but he does need to start thinking about life after the game. At 37, Beckham is practically a dinosaur for the sport, and he acknowledged in his welcoming press conference on Thursday that he probably won't be in the team's starting lineup.

Instead, Beckham may be beginning to put in place a plan for life after the final whistle. Ellis Cashmore, a sociologist who writes about sports and media culture at Staffordshire University, said that prolonged exposure is always useful to celebrities building empires. In that way, the deal with PSG does double work: It keeps his name in lights for longer and also garners extra attention for the charitable contribution.

"When he does stop playing, which is going to be quite soon, his overall brand appeal will inevitably decline because we will inevitably forget about this guy," he said. "I think he's probably thinking, I want to stay in the shop window for a bit longer."

But Cashmore also cautioned against being too cynical in assessing Beckham's motives: "The guy is an athlete. He wants to do what he loves to do."

Bruno Satin, an independent players' agent who was with IMG for a decade, also said that the move to PSG ? even if it's to sit on the bench ? is a step up for Beckham.

"For him, to be on the PSG team, it's a higher level than being on the Los Angeles Galaxy," he said. "For the world of football, for real football, the Los Angeles Galaxy is nothing on the map of football."

Some wondered if Beckham was trying to avoid the notoriously sticky fingers of the French state with his plans to donate his salary.

But Sandra Hodzic, a tax lawyer with Salans, said the deduction an individual can take on such contributions is limited. Instead, it would be smarter for PSG to directly donate the salary ? and take a big tax break in the process.

Doing so would have an added benefit for the club: UEFA, the governing body for European football, mandates that clubs break even. The donation could allow PSG to essentially write off Beckham's entire salary ? a huge help for a team notorious for mega-contracts.

Beckham, meanwhile, would be better off trying to avoid becoming a French tax resident at all. So far, Hodzic said, he is making all the right moves: His family is staying in London, he plans to live only part-time in the country for less than six months, and his primary source of income ?whether or not he donates his salary ? isn't being earned in France.

Beckham's agent did not return calls for comment on specifics of the contract.

Still, the charitable contribution has raised the question about what Beckham is getting out of the deal. For one, he likely is still getting a cut of rights to his image. Jerseys with his name on them were already selling out at the PSG store on the Champs-Elysees on Friday.

Cashmore, who wrote a book called "Beckham," calls him a "marketing phenomenon" and estimates that about 70 percent of Beckham's income comes from endorsement deals ? with Adidas, for instance. That makes salary almost irrelevant ? especially for a man estimated by the Sunday Times Rich List to be worth 160 million pounds ($253 million).

But the football feeds the endorsements, Cashmore says.

"It makes an awful lot of business sense to perpetuate, to prolong his active competitive football career," he said, especially with a team that's doing fairly well this year. "It makes an awful lot of sense for him to showcase himself because it will generate more income from his various other sponsorship and licensing activities."

But certainly this move, as any at this late-stage in his playing career, is being made with an eye on what will come next. Cashmore said that when Beckham signed with the L.A. Galaxy, there was an understanding that he would eventually become an ambassador for American soccer. That plan clearly fell by the wayside ? perhaps because Major League Soccer decided it was just too expensive to keep on the star after his presence on American soil failed to generate more interest in the game.

It's possible, Cashmore said, that Beckham is looking for a similar deal after his stint at PSG, which is Qatari-owned. The tiny, wealthy nation is hosting the World Cup in 2022, and Beckham's contract with PSG will establish a relationship with it; from there, a role as, say, an ambassador for the tournament would seem more natural.

"For his after-career conversion, it's important to have links with major actors in the world of sports," said Satin. And Qatar is certainly one. It has poured money into PSG, drawing major names like striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It also funds the satellite network Al Jazeera, which could provide Beckham with a platform. And then there's the World Cup.

In the end, though, Satin said the clue to Beckham's thinking may be as simple as the eternal draw of Paris.

"PSG has become a glamorous club, a pretty nice club in a beautiful city," said Bruno Satin, an agent. "It's just two hours on the Eurostar (train) from London."

Delta updates its Android app with v2.0 makeover [DYKWIA?]

Fly Delta for Android

Airline still lacking a proper tablet app, however

A bit of good news tonight for those of you who a decent amount of time at 35,000 feet. Delta has updated its Android application to Version 2.0, just a couple weeks after it dropped for iOS. With it you'll get a brand-new user interface, as well as a bevy of new options, including the ability to purchase flights from your phone.

Missing -- still -- is any sort of tablet application. That's been annoying enough in the past (never mind that the phone application has worked just fine when sideloaded on tablets), but it's especially disappointing given the awesomeness that Delta brought in its iPad app, particularly when it comes to seeing what's on the ground beneath your flight at any given time.

Awareness Of Health & Fitness Propels The Sports Category ...

A new research report titled "Sports and Fitness Nutrition Foods and Drinks: A Global Strategic Business Report" by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., San Jose, CA, documents a comprehensive review of market, trends, issues, product overview, recent industry activity and profiles of major companies worldwide. The analysis provides market estimates and projections for product segments including Sports/Energy Foods and Sports/Energy Drinks.
?
According to the report, the role of sports nutrition products has witnessed a paradigm shift from ?muscle building? to one that promotes wellness and disease prevention. A fitness-crazy generation and the good-health image of sports drinks are factors driving growth in sports/energy drinks and sports/energy bars segments. Additionally, sports beverages are increasingly being used as refreshment drinks, which are further fuelling demand for these products in the marketplace. Presently, sports and energy bars are one of the fastest growing segments. Consumers who are on the move, or are too busy to have a proper meal are now more inclined towards sports and energy bars as healthy food alternatives.
?
Despite recovery from the impact of the global economic recession, uncertainty over stability of this recovery continues to persist. The Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis is proving to be a potential threat to market stability and global growth prospects. Sluggish recovery rates had a negative impact on the European economic growth and added to the macroeconomic uncertainties globally. In such pensive economic conditions, manufacturers of sports nutrition products find it extremely tricky to chalk-out near-term business expansion plans. The gloomy economic conditions are likely to reduce consumer spending and turn purchasing habits towards cheaper and economical alternatives. Further, financial shortfalls of suppliers and customers are likely to delay product introductions and aggravate inventory challenges. A large number of products in the sports nutrition market are premium products, and in a scenario where consumers are cutting down on unnecessary expenditure, it would be extremely difficult for manufacturers to generate profits out of the luxury and value-added product segments.
?
Sports and Energy Drinks market is no longer considered a niche segment in the beverage industry, with usage confined only to athletes and persons engaged in physical exercises and sports. The scenario has radically changed, with majority demand generated by active lifestyle users, keen on staying fit. Sports/energy drinks account for a massive chunk of the sports nutrition products market and are slowly foraying into the larger beverage market and are now becoming a part of the mainstream cluster. Major sports drink companies such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, are launching aggressive advertising campaigns to promote brands and capture attention of health conscious consumers. Energy beverage makers are also aware of demands of active lifestyle users while bringing about innovations in their product lines. Sales in energy and sports drink segment are also being driven by growing number of product introductions promising natural ingredients that offer long lasting and sustainable energy benefits.
?
Sports and energy bars, part of the effervescent Sports and Energy Foods category, represents one of the fastest growing markets, as consumers are turning busier day-by-day and are more impulsive towards their purchases of meals or meal replacements. Bars are mainly used as meal replacement snacks, which can provide quick medium of replenishing energy levels of the body. Ever since energy bars were first invented, efforts have been concentrated to develop products keeping in mind nutritional needs of both athletic and active lifestyle users. PowerBar, a pioneer in the food and energy bars business has played a revolutionary role in the category. Popular distributors of nutrition bars are food stores that garnered a big chunk of the market share. Drugstores are also the fast emerging distribution option in the bar category.
?
As stated by the new market research report on Sports and Fitness Nutrition Foods and Drinks, the U.S. constitutes the largest market worldwide. Favorable demographics, aging baby boomers and a sedentary lifestyle are the major growth promoters of the fitness industry in the country. The sports nutrition market witnessed exponential growth over the years due to new innovations, novel packaging and marked changes in consumer preferences. Sports supplements and sports nutrition functional foods are among the leading categories exhibiting strong growth. Latin America represents the fastest growing regional market displaying a CAGR of about 9.5% over the analysis period. Despite accounting for a small portion to the world?s food and beverage market, Latin America is expected to emerge as the hotspot in the coming years. The market for sports and energy drinks in Latin America is expected to surge in the near future primarily due to rising income levels, increased focus on health and wellness and willingness of consumers to spend on the category.
?
Major players profiled in the report include Abbott Laboratories Inc., Coca-Cola Co., Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., GlaxoSmithKline Plc., GNC Holdings Inc., Monster Beverage Corporation, Optimum Nutrition Inc., PepsiCo Inc., The Balance Bar Company, Red Bull GmbH, and Rockstar Inc., among others.
